Originally a road legal Italian hill climb race car in its very early years, this Marco Hesshaus engined GTAm recreation is a seriously special motorcar indeed.
Chassis number AR2445405 originally started life off as 2000 GT Veloce (105.21) and completed production on April 29th 1974, finished in Grigio Indaco with Cinghiale Maremma leatherette interior.
However it didn’t remain in the guise for long. In the late 1970’s, the GTV began to be modified and started to participate in Italian hill climbs before it’s then once owner (a Mr Haywood from Leicestershire) exported the car back to the UK after purchasing it whilst working out in Italy at the time.
The GTV comes with vast amount of paperwork which dates back to its earlier years in Italy, that includes the old Italian logbook, insurance documents and the export/import documents when it left for the UK in 1983 (with a hefty £53 import tax duty may we add!).
This is a large stack of invoices for the GTV from when it first arrived into the UK, with an Alfa Romeo service receipt dating back to August 1983, plus a host of more recent Alfaholics and Classic Alfa invoices for parts over the last decade to name just a few.
Let’s just ignore the staggering looks and stance for a second and get straight to the engine. During the car’s full nut and bolt rebuild back in 2017, the engine and gearbox were taken out of the GTV and bundled into the back of a Defender (see the pictures), before going on a European Jaunt to see Marco Hesshaus in Hannover (one of Alfaholics’ only true competition for specialised Alfa engines in Europe).
Over the next month whilst the engine was fully stripped down, forged pistons, high lifts cams, a stage two clutch (perfect for fast road/race use) and twin webber 45s were fitted. At the same time, the gearbox was given the full Macro overhaul treatment too.
Once completed, the running gear was shipped back to the UK where a freshly painted GTAm recreation was awaiting the refreshed power plant. It now sat on a new set of Eibach shocks and springs with new discs and pads all round, treated to a new fuel tank and ancillaries, a fully rebuilt LSD (carried out by Veloce Sport) and classically finished off with a new OEM 1750GT front grill.
